Project Description
This client purchased one of the loveliest homes, a former tavern, in Old Town, Alexandria but found that the existing area connecting to and above the attached garage did not meet the needs of their family of five for useful space, especially in terms of ceiling height. By adding strategic dormers, altering the pitch of the damaged roof of the garage, removing an ill-placed stairway accessing second floor spaces, and creating a new and better means for connecting the two portions of the 2nd floor together, these spaces became exactly what was envisioned initially.
The project added a new second-floor bath to be shared by the two vastly improved bedrooms. It also added a new rear flex space to be used as a yoga studio and a new laundry area as part of the bridge between the old and new spaces. A new spiral staircase connects both the first floor living spaces with the second floor and acts as a sculptural element in the existing hallway converted to a new mudroom. These additions carefully knit these spaces of the home together in a seamless configuration that appears perfectly placed and always existent.
